    Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme present in various tissues of the body such as liver and bone, primarily, but also occurs in kidney, intestine and placenta of pregnant women.
    Causes of alkaline phosphatase low may indicate certain diseases such as malnutrition, celiac disease, hypothyroidism , magnesium and zinc deficiency, anemia, severe liver dysfunction. Other causes include menopause, a rare genetic disorder of bone metabolism known as hypophosphatasia, decision of oral contraceptives. decreased alkaline phosphatase levels may be observed temporarily after a blood transfusion or a heart bypass.
